Hope is powerful
There are many articles written about how powerful the hope is, on the internet. Hope has given unbelievable power to people. It has the power to push your limits, it can control the mind. It can help you push your threshold limits; there have been unbelievable cases in the world where hope has lead people to do some miracles.
Hope has moved people out of untenable situations into better lives and has helped humans stay alive long enough to figure out how to thrive.
Hope is huge. It’s necessary. It’s motivating and in some cases life-saving.
I am not here to write something different, it’s more like an add-on to my beliefs in hope. We all hope something if you have crossed your teen years; you probably know what “Hope” can mean in someone’s lives. Hope is a powerful weapon.
There are so many movies that can give you hope in your day-to-day life — and beyond. Some of them are based on real-life stories while some are fictional but in the end, they leave you with the message of – Never lose hope. Movies like Pursuit of Happyness, Shawshank redemption, It’s a wonderful life, Good Will Hunting, Life of Pie and Slumdog Millionaires are some of my all-time favorite movies teaching me never to leave hope.
So what am I writing here today?
Today I want to share an experiment that was done to show how powerful a single ray of hope can be. I read this article on Quora a few days back and was left speechless.
The “Hope” Experiment
There was a study done at Harvard University in the 1950s under the supervision of Dr. Curt. His team placed a few rats in a pool of water to test how long do rats fight to survive in water. On average all the rats would give up in around 15 minutes due to exhaustion.
In the next batch, they repeated the same thing but this time right before they gave up due to exhaustion, the researcher would pluck them out of the water, dry them off, and allowed them to rest for few minutes.

After a while, they were again kept in water for the second round. In the second try, the time duration of rat fighting to survive increased tremendously. How long do you think they lasted? They had just given up in 15 minutes in the last round.
How long do you think they lasted?
Another 15 minutes? Wrong.
30 minutes? Wrong again.
1 hour? No.
60 Hours!
Yes. It’s not a mistake. Those rats survived for 60 hours in the second round. They kept swimming and trying till 60 hours until their body was completely exhausted, in a “hope” that someone will pull them out of the water just like before.
That’s how much hope is powerful.
If a single hope can lead those exhausted rats to swim for 59 hours and 45 minutes more than imagine what you can do by believing in YOU and your abilities.
The rats could have easily given up the second time if they had not been given hope that they can survive this. They gave their 100% when they had hope.
Hope can be a very powerful vehicle to get you where you want to be. Using hope with your desire can give unlimited power to your body and mind. It acts as a driving force and it keeps driving until you get what you want.
Hope changes our perspective. When we have hope, the impossible becomes possible. When we have hope, no relationship is so broken that it cannot be restored. When we have hope, no wrong that has been done is so severe that it cannot be forgiven. When we have hope, the chains of habit or addiction are never so strong that they cannot be unbound. When we have hope, we can destroy worry, fear, and doubt. When we hope, we can overcome the biggest challenge of our lives.
If you give yourself the power source of hope, you can do wonders.
I would like to end this with a quote, “Hope can be a powerful force. Maybe there’s no actual magic in it, but when you know what you hope for most and hold it like a light within you, you can make things happen, almost like magic” from here.

An excellent article! I’m a firm believer in hope! I found your article a great example of what hope can do!
I feel awful for the rats first of all! But I love the line “Hope is huge”. Sometimes I feel like it’s all I have on some days and that’s enough! Thank you for this.
Hope is something every person needs on these crucial covid virus times! Nicely written on it!

Very well written 👌👍
Just what I needed to hear this morning! Thank you
Hope truly can save a life. This is a great article.
Hope is very powerful. It’s also very tough to define. I did a survey on hope several months ago and the responses told me that hope is very personal. It is based on, among many things, our experiences, genetics and culture. It’s an interesting topic.
This is a really interesting topic. Hope is really one of the most important things when it comes to the bad days. Thanks for sharing!
I so much agree on the power of this one emotion ‘hope’. Thanks for sharing.
